This past year saw huge success with the album Tim McGraw and the
Dancehall Doctors. The dynamic "One Band Show" concert tour
that followed the album release filled arenas across the country. Both
the album and the tour were an opportunity for McGraw to showcase keyboardist
Jeff McMahon and the rest of the Dancehall Doctors, and the national media
quickly took notice.
Countless newspapers chronicled their travels as fans clamored for tickets
to the shows. Reporters couldn't wait to get the inside scoop on what
was in store for McGraw and his musical menagerie. Cameras waited at every
door, hoping for a shot of the superstar and his boys.
But one interview stood out from all the rest for McMahon.
Margie Gray, a teacher and friend for many years, had involved her entire
fourth-grade class in an exciting writing assignment. The editors of Time
For Kids magazine were seeking young writers for the student edition
of their publication. Each student would offer an example of their work
to be evaluated by other teachers at their school. The best would then
be sent on for consideration by the magazine for a spot as a student editor.
This is an entry by one of Margie's fourth-grade students at Great Oaks
Elementary in Round Rock, Texas. Her student, Lea, chose to write her
article based upon her skills as an interviewer. The article was one of
four from a class of twenty-two to be selected as entries for the competition.
"Lea wanted to talk to me for her article, and she was a joy,"
said McMahon. "We were in the middle of the tour, so we did the interview
over the phone. She was so polite, so professional, and so prepared! It
was great
she really knew what she wanted from the interview."
He was thrown off a bit by some of the questions, however. "Well,
she asked me about Elton John, and I realized that I've played his music
twice as long as she's been around
at least! But it was really cool
to get her perspective on what we do out here."
